Laura “Jo” “Boochie” York, 70, rural Oblong, Illinois passed away at 2:25 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, at the Ridgeview Care Center, Oblong, Illinois. Born in Crawford County, Illinois on July 15, 1942, she was the daughter of Herschel Joseph Moffitt and Dora Mae (Spencer) Moffitt. She was a graduate of Oblong High School ~ Class of 1959. She was a farm wife. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Oblong, Illinois and she also attended Berlin Congregational Christian Church, rural Oblong, Illinois. She was Founder and Co-President of the Oblong Sports Boosters for 28 years since it was founded in 1984. Laura was the person who got signatures for the petitions to establish a girl’s softball and basketball team for Oblong High School. She helped with the girl’s softball teams; she was in charge for getting the ticket takers for the sporting events; each year she helped with the cookout at the first Oblong High School football game; Home Extension Club; Honorary member of the Oblong FFA; helped with the Thursday Club after school program for Oblong Schools; she helped organize funeral dinners; sat on the election board for many years. Laura enjoyed going to ball games but if she could not attend then she would listen to the game on the radio keeping her own stats; picking blackberries, blueberries and strawberries then making jam and jelly then giving it away; watching John Wayne and Bonanza on television; enjoyed reading especially to her grandson’s Kindergarten class. She also enjoyed gardening, selling sweet corn and helping bring in the harvest each year driving “ol Blue”, but most of all she loved being with and or doing anything for friends, her kids and especially her grandchildren.
On April 30, 1960, she married Irvin E. York, who survives. Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, David & Jill York; five daughters and sons-in-law, Connie & Darrell Meese, Cindy & Kevin Maus, Tammy & Jason Johnson, Julie & Billy Reese and Jodi & Darrell Wallace; a great-niece Destiny Budd who has been raised by Laura and Irvin since she was 4 months old; thirteen grandchildren, Ginger & Nick Voegel, Brad & Michelle Meese, Collin Meese, Lacey & Cody Bliss, Kody & Sarah Maus, Tracy & Jared Pepmeier, Tiffany & Nathan Ferguson, Kyle York, Anthony Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Anden Wallace, Autumn Crouch and Wyatt Reese; four great-grandchildren, Sarina & Miah Voegel, Emerson Bliss and Waylon Ferguson; four brothers, Teddy, Jimmy, Sammy and Don; six sisters, Susie, Corey, Katie, Polly, Dorsey and Georgia.
Preceding Laura in death were her parents; two sisters, Virginia and Margie; and one brother, Tommy.
Bro. Bill Ikemire and Bro. Dee Wolfe will officiate the funeral service with burial in the Berlin Cemetery, rural Oblong, Illinois.
